I wrote about best Coast, what, a year ago now? Like that. And I liked em didn’t love em then and I like em don’t love em not. Much like Bach Fossils they get samey over an album, and uulike friends? lover? Wavves, they lack that je ne sais fucking world smashing quoi.
Here is the chicks mixtape plus comments as given to the Independent plus my two cents:
1. Pavement- Kennel District
She: This is one of my favourite Pavement songs, and I’m super stoked because we are playing the same day as them at Pitchfork festival next week. I keep saying that if I hear them play this song I’ll probably cry, because it reminds me of being a teenager.
Me: Or maybe it sucks?
2. Patience & Prudence- Whisper Whisper
She: I love the guitar in the intro of this song, and i just think basically every patience & prudence song rules, but this one is super good and the melody rules.
Me: Never heard it but I like the review, i like plain speak
3. Steely Dan- Do It Again
She: I basically know every lyric to every steely dan song because my parent’s listened to them non-stop when I was growing up–this song rules, and “Can’t buy a thrill” is probably still one of the best records I have ever heard.
He: Great song though not sure about the vocal. “Catch A Thrill” is a good album, “Pretzel Logic” for one is better.
4. Billy Joel- Say Goodbye To Hollywood
She: I love that this song has the same intro drum beat as the ronettes “Be my baby”. I think this is one of the Billy Joel’s best songs. My mom took me to see Billy Joel like 2 summers ago, before I moved to new york, and it was one of the coolest things ever–it was just a bunch of really drunk 40 year old women, and my mom and I singing along to every song.
Me: Drunk 40 year old women -mmmmm.
5. The Queers- I Gotta Girlfriend
She: The Queers were one of my favourite bands in high school, just super straight forward, fun pop-punk from the Lookout! records era. I seriously still listen to this record all the time, it’s classic pop punk, man.
He: Don’t know em.
6. Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons- Bye Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye)
She: I listened to this record a lot when we were on tour in Europe, and I would play this song over and over because the harmonies are seriously some of the best ever–but frankie valli is like the master of every amazing harmony ever–not to mention, some of the best pop songs ever written. I just think this song is so classic, and I could listen to it over and over and never get sick of it.
He: I thought this was the Bay City Rollers.
7. Josie Cotton- Johnny, Are You Queer?
She: This song is from one of my favorite movies ever “Valley Girl”. I just think this song rules, and it’s super simple and poppy–and thats the kind of shit I am into!!
Me: Stick with Bonnie Hayes.
8. Weezer- Why Bother?
She: One of my favourite jams ever. We listen to a lot of weezer on tour. It’s just simple, and fun, and I think it reminds everyone of being young.
Me: Undeniable -we agree on one.
9. Beach House- Walk in the Park
She: Beach House has quickly become one of my favourite bands to come out in the last few years. I just think they write song of the best songs out there right now, and Victoria’s voice is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard–I listened to this record a lot on tour in Europe too, and I think this is definitely my favourite song off the album, though every song on there rules.
Me: Never trust a band with Beach in their name unless the other word is boys.
10. Fleetwood Mac- That’s Alright
She: Love, love love, this song–Stevie’s voice is so good on this track, and I love how country sounding this song is–plus the lyrics rule.
Me: Really? A little whatever.
11. Bread- Baby I’m-a Want You
She: Bread rules, man. smooth 70s jams are where it’s at. This song is really beautiful, and I think the lyrics are super cheesy and sweet, and I’m into cheesy, sweet shit, haha.
Me: Agreed – love this band, only the Carpenter’s did better soft rock
12. Avi Buffalo- One Last
She: I’m super into this album right now, I think these kids are amazing. Avi and Rebecas’ voices go so perfectly together.
Me: I might give em a try.
13. Aretha Franklin- Call Me
She: T
his is one of the most beautiful songs ever, and it reminds me a lot of my friend Alex, because we used to listen to it a lot in my room in Brooklyn and sing it to each other. I heard it in a bookstore the other day, and I was reminded how much I love it.

Me: Hey She, it’s Me. Try “Sparkle” I mean right now. Curtis Mayfield wrote it. Need I say more?
14. Beyonce- Halo
She: Seriously, fuck all haters, Beyonce is amazing, and this song is undeniably amazing and beautiful, and I think everything she does rules.
He: Cmon, girl. Beyonces? At least Kelly Rowland.
