I doubt this is the kind of music you listen to!”, fellow rocknycer Alyson said to me via email, after she sent me a few Edward Sharpe and Magnetic Zeros songs to review.
As a self proclaimed music connoisseur, or more a music junkie, I’d say, ( to better fit in with the rest of NYC), I listen to all music and will give any new band a chance at a piece of my ever giving heart.
Edward Sharpe, I later discovered, is a fictitious messianic character created by Alex Ebert, ex-vocalist for power pop group Ima Robot, whom appears in his book. According to Ebert, Sharpe “was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind…but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love.” Maybe a bit autobiographical, but I’m not one to judge, might have has some self/messianic thoughts before.
The band, or rather ensemble, with this power messianic figure at its core, is now on that same mission to heal and save mankind, through the power of great music and love songs.
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, consisting of original members Ebert along with Jade Castrinos, and an additional eight full time members, with an additional five who sometimes help enrich the music, have been playing together for about 2 years. What is quite neat and unique about this band, is all 10 members contribute their vocals to the overall sound of the band.
Their songs of love, especially, “Home” and “Carries On”, interpreted the right way, have such a peaceful, loving message, and can’t help but to heal and help all who give them a second of their ear time. To be healed, you don’t need to be injured; to be helped, you don’t have to have a problem. You just have to be open for change; change is mostly never bad, just different, huge difference.
“Home”, as a great video online, one I would recommend watching, a great love song can only brighten up your day, sharing the message of love, togetherness, and unity. “Home is wherever, with you,” lyrics from song, is something EVERYONE wants to be able to say about someone, someday. My friend Raya, coincidentally posted the video, as I was writing this here post. Via the law of attraction, our god vibes and loving moods must have synced and therefore, brought the posted link to video right to me, ( no I’m not stoned, just in an exponentially good mood ever since Edward Sharpe entered my eye drums earlier this afternoon. Give it a try, I’m a fan. I am also guessing that Mr. Ebert and Ms. Castrinos engaged in some sort of awesome love affair, this is entirely made up only from the information I have obtained today from listening to their music, but i wouldn’t be surprised, to say the least. Ok, so after further thought, ill say 99% their home is wherever, with each other.)
So enough about what I think, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are playing next weekend, unfortunately for all our NY readers, you will need a plane to go hear them. They are playing the Sunset Junction Street Fair, Los Angeles, next Sunday, the 22nd, their set starts at 8pm on the Bates stage. If you are in LA, GO! All you youngins and oldies, (0-12 and 65+) it’s free!, everyone else $15 in advance.
I would like to thank Edward Sharpe and Alyson Camus for drastically improving my day through the magic of music.
