I saw “The Capeman” on Broadway. Twice. Once in previews and it was so lousy I couldn’t believe my eyes and went again. And it was just as bad.
The problems were
a) Derek Walcott’s book
b) The cheoreography
c) The directing
d) The acting
BUT
The songs and the singing, Marc Anthony as the young gang member Salvador Negron, Ruben Blades as Negron after his release from jail., are superb and the three night free in concert performance at Delacort would be a must see except., let’s be honest, we’ll never get a tix. Directed by “Hair” Diane Paulus who knows her way around a rock and roll score.
Simon’s problem was he thought he could beat Broadway at its own game and he needed to get a Broadway giant to produce and then trusted them with the material.
If he has learnt his lesson I bet “The Capeman” makes it to broadway again.
