Sometimes for no reason I can figure out, a coupla (well, usually three) songs will find themselves in very heavy rotation and I’ll have trouble getting back to doing what I am not being paid to do: listening to everything.
This Saturday morning it is these:
Mine – Taylor Swift – I know you think it is the “every time I look at you it’s like it’s the first time”. But it isn’t. It is the repetition of “care” during the “careless man’s careful daughter” chorus. here is why: because in a song about being scared to care for another person, and discovering you can, the use of “care” in a different context emphasizes theme without overkilling theme. it is the work of a master songwriter. And sure, I’m discussing lyric and not the high level melody lines she is singing (ps her voice sounds great), but the entire song is enrapped in “care” as the meaning of love. This woman is unreal. With both hands tied behind her back she can out write a dozen Lady Antebellums.
Rebellion (Lies) – Arcade Fire – The best song at Thursday night’s concert because it is the first and finest moment of band and fans joining together to,,, condemn? Worry? Share grief. It is the equal of any possible anthemn and it is just words which means anybody can know it and can sing along to it and the word “Lies” is so powerful. And, the “lies” is us telling them we don’t believe em. Last night, thissong , not “Wake Up” mattered to me.
We Are Each Other – The Beautiful South – “Closer than a sister with her baby brother, closer than a secret agent working under cover, too close for a lover, we are each other”. Is that a sweet sentiment, i don’t know. heaton is cynical enough for it to mean even more thhan it says. Platonia? Desire?
