Shinobi Ninja “The Video Game EP” Reviewed: They Scream Hip Hop by Woody Fuller

Besides being proud owner of one of the coolest band names in recent history, the Shinobi Ninja’s also possess a unique fusion of quite the wide array of sounds that stream from the differences in each of their six members. This self titled “Voltron-esque” rock group, is bound by their hardbody hipster party lifestyle, but more strongly and importantly by their deep love of music.

With only 6 tracks on their Brooklyn to Babylon – “The Video Game EP”, they give the world a pretty good sense of what they can provide the MJOA (Music Junkies of America). Overall they do a good job of mashing some punk/rock/metal/hip-hop/reggae into one lucid sound. Sometimes leaning more towards a Beastie Boys/Rage feel, with catchy raps over a heavy metal beat, other times giving off more of a reggae vibe while infusing a big enough dose of hipster punk to still satisfy Brooklyn.

They scream hip/hop, ( not literally, just their whole vibe and sound), but still keep it ganster with their hardcore ensemble, shreddin and banging drums. As a hip/hop head, love seeing some hip/hop “zest” sprinkled on any other genre, but combining it with like 4 types of music.. pretty shhwweeeett if you ask me.
rock nyc have championed Shinobi’s un-human amount of energy onstage since their earliest concerts and after Iman Lababedi’s most recent review, Terminator Dave contacted us to tell us he used it to gauge how far they’ve come. Subsequently, TD wrote a great post on his influences for the wensite, you should definitely check it out.

“To put it simply, they are a walking, breathing and screaming cartoon: Loud, colorful, and full of energy to put nearly any other band to shame.”- Radio Exile

Comprised of vocalists, D.A. and Baby G, bassist Jonny on the Rocks, guitarist Maniac Mike, drummer, Terminator Dave, and DJ Axis on the 1’s and 2’s, each member brings some special flair and “shabang” to the Ninjas musically, each with very different influences and past musical experiences.

“Brooklyn to Babylon” and “Rock Hood” being their two most promising tracks, I will defiantly be going to Europa (98 Meserole Ave, Brooklyn) on August 18th to see what they got live. See what all the hype is about; I personally don’t believe everything I read. Ninja have invited us to the release party for Baby G’s solo album so I getta see for myself! “Brooklyn to Babylon remix” is pretty hot too.

Downloads of their cd “The Video Game EP” are available all over web, including there site http://www.shinobininja.com/  for $5, son $5.

CD just dropped in June, they got a tour scheduled for 2011, I’m excited to check back, see where the Shinobi Ninja are kickin ass in the upcoming months/year. But until then.. Peace out Girl Scout!
