Contact report that Lady Gaga played Phoenix, Arizona last night in the face of oitrageous pressure from the rock community.
From the stage, Stefani said: “I got a call from some big rappers and big rockers. They said, ‘We’d like you to boycott Arizona because of SB 1070’. “I told them, ‘Do you really think that… pop stars are going to shut down the state?’ You really think us dumb fucking pop stars are gonna collapse the economy in Arizona? I’ll tell you what we have to do about SB 1070. We have to be active. We have to actively protest. I will not cancel my show. I will hold you, and we will hold each other, and we will protest this state. Do not be afraid. Because if it wasn’t for all of you immigrants, this country wouldn’t have shit. And I mean it. I mean it so deeply in my soul.”
Gaga is, of course, 100% right. Hold the biggest benefit in Phoenix and spend the entire time lambasting the ridiculous law which forces everybody to carry their papers everywhere or risk being held in jail.
But don’t boycott Arizona: it’s like saying, if I close my eyes it will go away. IT WON’T GO AWAY. Police the border, not for immigrant workers but for drug pushers and gangsters who are turning Muexico into a war zone. Then get enough people who agree it is a terrible law, get it on the ballot, and the people of the State reject it. It is called democracy.
