Ozzy said this about the record business the other day discussing 360 degree contracts: “Nowadays? Fucking hell! The other day, I was informed that new bands who’ve just signed with their record companies have to give away part of their publishing (rights), part of their gig money, part of their concessions, whatever… What the fuck is going on? I wouldn’t like to be one of the bands of today. It’s fucking disgusting the way they treat the bands…
“It’s (the music industry has) changed so much. Someone can be the biggest thing in the world, and then the next month you go ‘What happened to them?’ Record sales are no more – they aren’t selling records that much any more, because of this downloading thing.”
He said this in a direct conversation with rock nyc. Welllll… no not really. He told it to Thequietus.com and we took it off contact.
Still, does Ozzy have a point? Somewhere among today’s posts is a story about Amanda Palmer selling her album herself on line.
Here is the facts…
1. If you wanna sell a million copies you have to be
2. Already big and can do it yourself.
or
3. Ready to sign with a major.
but
if you
4. Are ready to be a smaller to midsize talent you may
5. Be able to do it yourself.
so
6. pick your poison.
