M E T H OD MAAANNN!! Despite the overall theme of Camp Bisco being bass thumping electro funk and improv electro rock, WU Massacre, (Method Man, Raekwon, and Ghostface), might have stole the weekend.
Yes this happened a week ago. Yes I am still writing about it. No, this is not my last post either. The nostalgic feelings that I am having, bringing me back to one of the greatest and most epic weekends of my short 22 year life, turn me on; a lot of things turn me on, and when things do, I can not help myself but to continue with whatever it is, neglecting any consequences that little by little send me to the darkside, (ok enough about me, back to Bisco, and thanks to fellow writer Neil Strauss, (whom has written many rock and roll musician’s biographies and currently writes for Rolling Stone), for my new insight into the “Darkside”, as well as being an inspiration to me about music and other non-music activities).
So method man along with his compadres rocked the whole festival on Friday evening. As I previously wrote, I was backstage before their set, trying to score an interview with anyone from Wu. Meth was about an hour late, so I knocked on their dressing room door and asked if any other band members wanted to do an interview. Raekwon told me that they needed to prepare a bit and once Meth got there they might be able to spare a second, which I didn’t believe, but we stayed optimistic.
We waited in the area outside the artists’ trailers, soon enough a member of their ever-growing entourage came outside. I went to talk to him, found out he was Raekwon’s cousin, Spizz, (or something like that) and spent shows shooting video of the group to use for upcoming promo events and for various online uses. He also sold “Got Weed? Got Blunt?” t-shirts after the show. Defiantly the go-to-guy I had been dying to meet, (slight sarcasm, you catch it?)
Whatever, he was cool, and promised us that before show we had no chance but after, Meth frequently gave hr or so to sit with media for interviews and pics and such. Over someone’s important walkie-talkie, we learned that Meth had finally arrived, game time. We asked Raekwons cousin if he wanted to join us for a smoke before the show, he quickly accepted our offer. We went to back of main stage to find Meth himself, blunt in hand, warming up by reciting some lyrics. Now this is cool, we need a pic. I tried my best not to be obvious as we took pics with me in foreground and Meth in background. Blunt 1 out, blunt 2 sparked. Media member vs fan was rapidly changing, time to go to front if stage to see Wu Massacre and what they brought to the fields of Camp Bisco.
Came out with all the classics, some Wu tang jams, like C.R.E.A.M and Bring Da Rukus, and of course Method Man hit METHOD MAN. Had the entire crowd more hype and loud and on their feet than any previous act of weekend.
“He brought the fuckin rukus to Bisco… I never knew so many hippies liked Meth haha,” my photographer Chris said to me the other day, while we were reminiscing about the show.
Tonight’s gonna be a good night, I thought to my self. He did his patented “crowd walk” where instead of surfing, he actually walks across the crowd atop their hands, Jesus on water status. I promised myself at the time I will someday do that, I probably won’t. We look front row and see that our friends Sarah and Ayanna are actually part of the many groping hands holding up Mr. Man.
I love hip/hop, not really today’s hip/hop scene, but yesteryears, so watching Method Man doing his thing, not only rocked my world, but re assured me that the days of GOOD hip/hop are still out there for you to access and just maybe more great hip/hop artist’s will emerge.
The Show flew by, but was still very good, excuse me great, they sure held it down, especially for not being a hip/hop fest.
