‘What’s in it for’, the first single of Avi Buffalo’s self-titled album, is addictive and a five minute trip in a refreshing but also very familiar territory where everything seems dreamy and magical.
They are an indie band from Long Beach with 19 years old Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg for lead vocalist and guitarist, and although I don’t much about them, I wanted to write about this curious little song that popped up in my ears when wandering from one blog to another.
I guess it will probably be a common place to say the song is very Shins-esque, a high pitch voice, a very enjoyable melody on guitar you catch in one listening, many layers of vocal harmonies with some wooo-oo-ooo-oooo in the background after the chorus, ‘What’s it in for someone with nothing to do?/What’s it in for me?’ then, another layer of haaaaaa very Flaming Lips. Wow, two famous band references just for one song! It’s dense and light at the same time, like some sweet rich honey sliding in your throat.
It could be about an attempt to get out of a relationship, with weird lines like ‘All these things that you learn, I’ve been knowing since my childhood/You are tiny and your lips are like little pieces of bacon’, although I’m not too sure.
I will not be your Nathalie Portman and say it will change your life, but you should give it a try here:
They are opening for My Morning Jacket on August 11th and 12th in Southern California
