Active Viewin': rock nyc concert picks for the week of November 4th, 2013

are you 20/20 experienced?

Yes, I think we can all agree that Jay- Z schooled Justin Timberlake in stadium rock at Yankee Stadium last summer BUT Arena rock? My bet is young Justin is gonna kill it at Izod Center on Saturday. 17K seater is just about perfect for the most charming man in rock and when I saw him at the VMA’s at Barclay Center he was substantially better already.

Monday – Margot Macdonald – So good during the CMJ fest last month, this is the record release party and she is bringing her full band along for it. Plus the newbie, Canvas, is terrific

Monday – Black Lips – MHOW – A terrific action filled and very very out there recorded  punk band, live they are even better. It’s been knocking on three years since Arabia Music

Tuesday – The Head And The Heart – Terminal 5 – Melodic indie band sells out T5

Wednesday – Cherie Currie – Gramercy Theater – The other Runaway

Wednesday – James Blake – Terminal 5-  Winner of the Mercury Prize for 2013!

Wednesday – Midlake –  Mercury Lounge – remember a coupla years  when everybody had beards and was playing indie folk? These guys were the best at it.

Thursday – Born Ruffians – Bowery Ballroom – Good emo rockers, very impressive maybe six years ago opening for Paramount.

Thursday – Ed Sheeran – Madison Square Garden – One man band fills Arena

Thursday – Rudimental – Bowery ballroom – Brilliant disco band for the UK

Friday – Titus Andronicus/Lucero – Patrick promises a 30 song rock opera next time round.

Friday – The Eagles – Madison Square garden – Expect it to go on for hours and hours and hours and hours…

Saturday – Kate Nash – Terminal 5 – Her last album came and went but live she is nearly in Lily Allen league

Sunday – Denny Laine – Iridium – Played with Moody Blues and Wings, so expect plenty of “Go Now” and “Medicine Jar”
