Admiiring Admiral Radley by Alyson Camus

Admiral Radley, a new band born from two old ones, Grandaddy (Jason Lytle, Aaron Burtch) and Earlimart (Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray), will release their first album ‘I heart California’ on July 13th.

Grandaddy, an indie rock band from Modesto, CA, split up in 2006 after having released 4 studio albums, whereas Earlimart, whose frontman Aaron Espinoza owns the Ship Studio in Eagle Rock, CA, have already released 6 albums.

I have read that the band’s moniker is an anagram of their two names (well it does not exactly work) or comes from a real Craiglist ad for a 747 plane that ended with the instruction to contact Admiral Radley if interested.

They have a debut single ‘I Heart California’ that you can download here for free:

The song sounds almost exactly like a Grandaddy song, mostly because of Jason Lytle’s very recognizable voice, and his typical synthesizer riffs. It is a catchy pop song, keyboard driven, with appealing vocal harmonies, an ode to the golden state, which should certainly be taken with a certain dose of irony because of the lyrics:

‘Iced Tea in my hair/ drugs fall out of diaper bags as Midwesterners stare’
‘Fake tits in the symphony’

Ha, ‘I wish they all could be California girls’,… not exactly!
Admiral Radley is playing for free at the Hammer Museum in LA on July 8th, and I will try to catch them.
