My name is Iman Lababedi and I am a music junkie.
I listen to music from the moment I wake up to the moment the game starts.
I go to concerts, I buy music, I listen to every single mp3 that is sent to me. If I go a week without a live set I get the shakes.
And I don’t feed my music addiction to run a music blog, I run a music blog to feed my music addiction.
The producer Stephen George knew what my problem was on a comment he left on my My Pet Dragon review. “I am a music junkie, just like you are my man”, he wrote, and he was right.
Here is one difference: I don’t bother a lot with any particular period of music, except maybe the present. But I don’t have an age that appeals to more than others.
By decade in the rock era I would say, just about:
2000s +
1970s
1950s
1990s
1960s
1980s
That’s, what? 60 years I have a pretty good handle on Western pop.
Here’s another thing: I have a problem with alcohol and the effects of alcoholism and music junkiedom are very similar. I get antsy without music. I spend my last penny on it. If I hear of a new band I MUST LISTEN TO IT IMMEDIATELY. It takes all my free time and most of my unfree time.
I get depressed without new music to listen to and I am always searching out sounds. I invest in music I know I won’t like just to be certain I don’t like it for the right reasons.
I listen to music more than I write and I write more than I speak.
Interviewing Emii the other day she “I’m… addictied to music. I don’t wanna say addicted but that’s the way it feels.”
“You’re a music junkie junkie.” I replied.
“That’s what it’s like. I’m at the studio every day by 5am, whether I have or cold or anything. Adrien says I caught the bug”.
That’s another way music junkies are like any other type of junkie: it kills your social life. Everybody I deal with at the moment, I mean actually wanna talk to, deals in thinking about music. Personal stuff, personal life: I don’t hae the time for it. Emii told me she broke up with her boyfriend because music consumed her. If you aren’t writing for rock nyc? My interest in you has immediately dropped in half.
So that’s me, music has consumed my life.
