Winner – Spanking Charlene – Remember how we missed the Del Lords gig by going to Bowery Electric too late last summer? Well, guess what? We also missed Spanking Charlene a band that makes you wonder whether the first word is an adjective or a verb. Spanking Charlene are such a great , tasty vicious bunch of rockers, undoubtedly it is an adjective. Plus, Charlene is a bad ass, I am sure if anybody gets spanked it’s the fans. The good news is, when the Del Lords play Sullivan Hall on October 10th, Spanking Charlene will be opening again and we will finally get the opportunity to catch em live. All of which makes the show a major major piece of work.
Loser – Lionel Richie – I can forgive Lionel for failing to come within a million miles of selling out Barclay Center, and I can forgive him for ignoring what he does best, I don’t really blame him at all for the cold sound and while he should have gone with a (substantially more expensive) orchestra rather than his mutated rock band, I can forgive him for the mathematics. But I can not and never will forgive him for the singalong to “Endless Love”. It was unforgivable.
