I have written about Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift being great songwriters but never in the same post. But after Lady Gaga said the exact same thing about Swift and Swift reciprocated, perhaps we can all agree that the reason why these two women are the head of the pack is not only only but definitely also because their songwriting skills are excellent.
Swift should consider writing for other people. She has the skills of a young Carole King but she is too personal. People would cover “Tears On My Guitar” or “Forever Or Always”, even a Reba, if they didn’t feel like idiots singing about High School proms. All she has to do is widen her scope.
Gaga is covered a lot because musicians love the songs and so open the hood to see how it runs and find the song under the bells and whistles. It is a revelation and a band like the Morning Pages can’t help BUT show the tick tock making the watch run (how many more metaphors: the poop in the baby diaper… er, maybe not).
After the thrill of the new is gone, to have a career you need to write catchy song.
