Hear Ye On Spotify: what rock nyc is listening to 9-21-13

both sings and paints a masterpiece

1. When I Paint My Masterpiece Demo – Bob Dylan – If you have been raised on the Greatest Hits 2 version, it isn’t the solo on piano that flips you out, it is the bridge: “Sure wish I hadn’t had sold my old Vitrola, ain’t nothing like that good ol rock and roller” all that’s missing is the coca cola line – A+

2. When I Paint My Masterpiece – The Band – Sure Helm got all of the local, and the bridge gives us coca cola but loses ol rock and roller, still the accordion doesn’t quite work for me. For some reason, this is a sad song and the Band are singing it as a road song – A

3. Losing You – Solange – It took me a year to get over that irritating sample, but I finally did it and can relax into Ms. Knowles, who opened for Vampire Weekend yesterday, song – B+

4. TRIPWIRE – Elvis Costello And The Roots – This is the pop move? – C

5. Achy Breaky Heart – Billy Ray Cyrus – There is a reason this was huge, it layers hooks upon hooks upon hooks – B+

6. Peaceful Easy Feeling – The Eagles – Let me explain: if it is opn the Blue cover greatest hits, it is good, anywhere or thing else, not so much — A

7. Crash Landing – Loveland Duren – My friend Robert Ross called Bloody Cupid one of the best albums of the years, but as these things go, this blues wailer is a touch too tasteful – B+

8. Sugar WON’T WORK – Elvis Costello And The Roots – I guess the bass lick is pretty good – D+

9. I’m Coming Home – The Deviants –  The late Mick Farren’s band and pretty good garage rock blues – B

10. Sirens – Pearl Jam – Something of a disappointment, I thought Eddie was over this overblown rock ballad stuff – C+

11. When I Paint My Masterpiece – Bob Dylan – It isn’t on ITunes but it is worth searching out on Greatest Hits Two, the Band backing him and no bridge – A
