The only guy who can make himself felt besides Dre’s mammothly fucked up with beats on a Dre production in 1993 was Snoop.
In 2010, Snoop is so propulsive, has such an intense yet fruggy flow, he destroys Katy Perry’s cute shit “Californoia Gurl”.
In 93, on Doggysttle and some of The Chronic, Snoop comes completely into his own.
And sure it is all about the vicious (we take it for granted now of cours, but NWA -Dre’s learning ground, wasn’t so far away) hangsta lyric but that notwithstand, it was ALL ABOUT POP MUSIC.
Hell, “Lodi Dodi” still sounds so good it would be a hit if released today. Maybe a bigger one.And sure it consitutes a cover, but so what? It’s a great cover so there. And still it sounds so good, and fuck, even Biggie hi-jacked the mother fucker Slick Rick and “Hypnotize” is more original but I’ll gie it to Snoop on points.
So many other songs -here, “Gin And Juice” for one (in my world: “with my mind on my money and my money on my mind” is part of the vernacular)…. ohh the the Funadelic excellence of “Who Am I (What’s My Name)”
A superb album, and along with the Chronic? Stole hip hop from the East Coast and it took a handful of murders, and a lotta of jailing, for the East Coast to take back the crown.
