I blame Diii
She knows what big fans Mary Magpie and I are of her band Let Me Love – Mary wrote about em months ago and I followed up.
But back in the bad old early 2010s you could only stream Diii’s songs on myspace and facebook and now you can buy the mp3s. The first release, from May 5th, is the Let Me Love self-titled Live In LoveEP. This has been followed by an appearance on Dropped A Popped Locket’s June 1st album Attack Attack.
This is really pretty awesome stuff. Let Me Love is like the electronic bands I have been reviewing a lot lately, everyone from LCD and Holy Ghost!! to Quitzow and 3Oh!3 except… Let Me Love is more fun than all of the above, even 3Oh… On her EP, even on the slower numbers, the sense of joy is anything but indulgent. The beats are programmed, the vocals heavily produced but unlike, say Quitzow, it is to draw you in. On the flawless “Sleepy Nights (Forever)” Diii’s vocals have an echo of autotune and a rap in the middle but the effect is much less hip hop production and more a cousin to Dr. Luke -it is a pop(ped) sensibility.
“The Perks Of Being A Doormat” is a full fledged teen pop ballad. Mary will love it (I’m gonna email it to her for a review as well). This is big time, break through pop and it is so good (I even love the title…). In my day this would be the single but I think you can settle for the one with a video!!
Diii’s most recent song is on the Attack Attack is the great “Mr. Krabs”. I mean fabulous. A boy/girl dynamic with a a great sample track and a really great rap by the guy and every thing the rap misses in flow it makes up for in speed and every sound in the world seems thrown at it but it has an oddly clean and mercurial sound. Like, you know how when you touch mercury it blobs into two, as though the various layers separate in your ear: that’s what this sound is like.
So, Diii: you really need to send out PR info. We don’t mind paying for review copies but we have to know you have released something to do so.
rock nycers, support Let Me Love and Dropped A Popped Locket… give them a chance. Go to myspace or facebook.
I have heard the future!!!
