“‘DO I NEED TO BE SHOT IT IN THE HEAD FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT HIM AND EVERYONE ELSE THAT HARASSES ME HAS GONE TOO FAR? I’M A HUMAN BEING. ” That is Lady Gaga ranting to former BFF, uber-gossip blogger Perez Hilton after she was told that Hilton was shopping for an apartment in the same building she lives in.

The squabble is nothing much, she tweeted to Hilton: “”STAY AWAY FROM ME + MY FAMILY YOU ARE SICK TRYING TO RENT AN APARTMENT IN MY BUILDING TO STALK ME. LEAVE ME ALONE!!!”

He wrote: “”I learned only after the fact that Lady GaGa lives in one of the buildings we looked at, and she was across the country in Los Angeles when I viewed that building.’After a day of innocent house-hunting, I am devastated and my heart hurts that my former very good friend, a person I used to call my ”wifey” and traveled the world with, is making very public and very untrue allegations about me on Twitter. ‘While it is still too painful for me to go into detail about why I chose to no longer make her a part of my life, I will say that I am a critic and not a ”stalker”. ‘Any allegation that I am stalking her, based on a day of house hunting with my baby boy and my mother, is utterly false, defamatory and now appears to be putting me and my family in danger.”

And finally on the fight on twitter between them: “Still have the text Perez sent me of me in a wheelchair w the words KARMA written across + Madonna pointing a gun at me. Day of my accident.”

Alright, all clear now look at this again: the pressure of The Fame Monster has finally and irrevocably made Stefani a different persons: after you have all the fame in the world, all the fame you can take, nobody will be happy till you are dead. What a terrifying notion, what a bizarre line between adoration and hate: between little and big monsters and the monsterness of being known by everyone is a huge chasm of fear. Gaga has always wanted to be a latter day Madonna and now she is becoming one. She has no choice but to deepen security and to harden herself; do you want to just hug her or do you want to hug her to death?

Neither Gaga nor Hilton’s concerns are idle, the intensity of feeling here is a danger, it is like unleashing something and losing control of it: it is like saying I am you to someone and then turning back on the intense identification; or like telling someone you love them and then saying you don’t: you never know in what direction they are going to jump.

It would take a leap of imagination to see the world through Lady Gaga’s eyes. It would be unimaginable to imagine the unbelievable: in a world of constant surveillance, Gaga is surveyed constantly. Everyone is a potential threat. She is right: some people won’t be happy till their identification is complete.
