I am not sure what the Westboro Baptist Church are thinking of, but I must admit that they are more cutting edge than any ten rock bands, then any 20 rocks bands, you might care to mention. In 2013, it could be concluded that spouting anti-homosexual, anti-Jew, indeed while they are not racist per se they do think President Obama is the Anti-Christ.
Headed by American Pastor from Topeka, Fred Phelps, these folks have it in for gays and, er, servicemen they think are gay? They disrupt Military Funerals by advising the next of kin that their children are going to hell, and bother innocent peace loving celebrities’ funerals, like Michael Jackson.
Oh, and they hate Jews as well though that kinda comes with the territory.
And it would take the Westboro Baptist Church to turn as mainstream an artist as Taylor Swift into a figure of promiscuity but guess, what, they managed it. They dubbed Taylor Swift “the whorish face of doomed America” and “the poster child of the doomed whores of young America” and protested Taylor’s recent two Kansas City performances. Ed Sheeran had this to say on Twitter: “To the people picketing outside the arena. Keep your homophobic views to yourself, it’s 2013.” Sort of difficult to deny though worth mentioning that freedom of expression is always the freedom to unpopular expression.
Did I mention that they also perform, truly truly awful parodies of pop songs. I couldn’t find the Taylor Swift one but here is a mind bogglingly awful take on “Poker Face”. Look, you can be as mentally fucked up as you choose and whatever, freedom of speech etc, et al, but step into the world of music and rock nyc will cut you down. No beat, no singing, lame-o parody lyrics (“You ain’t got no poker face”? Are you kidding me?).
The Westboro Baptist church should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
