Guillermo del Toro directed “Pan’s Labyrinth” -a second world war movie fairytale with a nightmare ending, and threfore has oodles of good karma coming his way and he needs some if not all of it for “Pacific Rim”. If it wasn’t Guillermo del Toro, I’d have walked out of this Godzilla influenced summer action blockbuster in the first 20 minutes. Taken at an insanely breakneck pace it tells the story of the cities along the Pacific Ocean being attacked by giant lizards (Kaiju) coming up from the depth of the ocean till the world bands together to build giant robots(Jaegers) driven by two people.
The Kaiju’s have adapted to the Jaegers and are winning the battles.
So there’s your story and you can make up the rest with little help from me,. So if you want here is character developement, empathy, plot, etc, this ain’t the movie for you. But if your thing is slithery, liquidy, scaley 300 feet tall lizards battling iron boxed steel built robots right across the pacific, this is the movie for you.
Starring Sons Of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam who has more six packs than I do on a long weekend and Charlie Day who is pretty funny, and a cast of tens, the resistance resists and battles its way out. The love interests never even kiss, so sex ain’t it. And it is hard to really root for anybody at all so you just got to live with it. Still, best action movie in awhile.
Music? That’s Tom Morello cranking it up with composer Ramin Djawadi on a couple of tracks and he leads some electric guitar whiz boom bah sounded like he has just escaped from an early Black Sabbath album.
Movie: B+
Music: B
