In order for an overweight person to be truly amusing there needs to be broach between their size and their actions. A certain surprise, maybe a gracefulness, or a charm, perhaps sexiness: something so their weight isn’t the joke but the play on what you expect their weight to signify. Oliver Hardy’s sweetness, Hattie Jacques sophisticated toughness, John Belushi’s sexiness. Something somewhere.
Melissa McArthy is a crude, stupid fat joke. The joke appears that she is even more of a self-indulgent disaster than she appears to be. She is a living, breathing slap in the face to overweight people. She isn’t a horrible looking and acting person because she is fat, she is horrible because she is Mellissa McCarthy: a crude, rude, nauseating disaster. She is awful.
And so is “The Heat”.
This unfunny cop buddy movie by “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig takes the Kristin Wiig character for that terrible movie and makes her uptight and gives the role to Sandra Bullock , then puts Melissa centerstage and sets them loose on Boston out to drop a drug kingpin. If that sounds like your idea of fun, I thought it was a very long (nearly two hour) drag. To say this movie stretches credibility isn’t enough, it is a stupendous in its need for us to buy into this garbage. Whether Melissa is screaming to everybody in the office that the chief of police, her immediate superior, has balls the size of peanuts, to having men fall at her feet in love with her, there is nothing either funny or truthful. Bullock is just a terrible terrible ball. Everybody involved should be arrested.
