
Slim Whitman – “When I’m calling you-o-o-o-, will you answer too-o-o-o”… that’s Slim Whitman, the yodeling master deeply influenced by one Jimmy Rodgers and much bigger in the UK and the rest of Europe, till he filmed a commercial for a greatest hits album and sold millions on TV. A fine falsetto who sounded a little like Roy Orbinson, Slim died last week at the age of 90.
Chet Flippo – Former Rolling Stone New York Bureau Chief,the country music aficiano turned mainstream into popstream for the music mag and many readers who discovered the hipness of the Jones and the Jennings due to his deeply influential writing. Chet’s wife died in December 2012 and Chet joined her soon after at the age of 69.
Joey Covington – Was the drummer with one of the biggest bands of the 1960s, the Jefferson Airplane. It is him you hear all over Volunteers. He died in a car accident at the age of 67.
Arturo Vega – The Ramones – The fifth Ramone for sure, and a very popular figure in downtown 1970s New York, Vega is responsible for the Ramones logo. Considered the fifth Ramone, he was the bands creative director.
