Five years before I started rock nyc, and about a year before my disastrous krakerjaxx, I tried to launch a knock off of metacritic only putting together all the theatre reviews for Broadway.
I was quite happily on my way before I discovered a site called newyorktheatreguide.com had beaten me to it.
I went there yesterday morning to see what they made of the musical. Tulis McCall of the website’s review is the only one I consider equal to mine (and not just because the writer has the same essential take as mine).
The rest of the reviews are all over the map though the word is the Times rave is gonna save the show big time. Here at work we get free tix to broadway and we’ve had tons of AI floating around and they just tightened up out of existence…
Theatre Guide figure an average of 3 stars -which really is much better than it deserves. In comparison, The Addams Family on broadway averaged 1 star.
Here is the pull quotes Theatre Guide offered up…
“Thrillingly raucous and gorgeously wrought.”
Charles Isherwood for New York Times
“Thanks for the music, Green Day. But, jeez, could you have spared a story? And a couple characters who aren’t clichéd stick figures?”
Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News
“By the time it ends, 90 minutes later, you may feel more numbed than stirred.”
Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post
“A hip veneer on vacant material, a thumping rock party for the oblivious.”
Jeremy Gerard for Bloomberg
“It’s loud, angry, and thrilling.”
David Sheward for Back Stage
“Music: Ten. Story: Three.”
Robert Feldberg for The Record
“Thrashing, convulsive and frequently unintelligible theatrical concert.”
Michael Sommers for Newsroom Jersey
“Visually striking, musically adventurous.”
Michael Kuchwara for Associated Press
“It might prove a tough sell for audiences not predisposed to the band’s music.”
Frank Scheck for The Hollywood Reporter
“In the tradition of “Hair,” “Rent” and “Spring Awakening” …doesn’t approach the impact of .. its illustrious predecessors.”
Steven Suskin for Variety
