So last week we covered Brian Setzer, and Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent. .and horror core…
which (follow me now) landed me smack dab into The Cramps.
Psychobilly? Hmm not sure.. I think there was really nothing to call them. A clearly defined rockabilly sound for sure with some whacked out Jr High horror lyrics. Like a B movie almost, “Attack of the Killer Tomato’s” or something
But one listen today of Garbageman” had me back in the groove. Its one of those sounds you love or hate and it will fluctuate with the weather but I freaking loved The Cramps back in the day.(were they produced by Monsieur Alex Chilton? oui?)
Anyway I’m a firm believer in time travel via audio and this is a great reunion.
Not familiar? Try “Human Fly” to begin with. This was my get ready for the club song back in the day as i blasted Aqua Net into my hair to make it as enormous and cat eyed the black liner. A cigarette smouldering nearby and a bottle of Merlot uncorked and covered in red lipstick. Great days indeed. Played a full volume it certainly got the mood on. Even today I can still see all the sink vanities I burned while preppin the look. “Teenage Goo Goo Muck” sure to follow.
The Cramps may well be the reason I adore the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. Cuz the film was so freakin weird and the surf songs so contradictory.. sorta like these cats here.
