The Elliott Smith Mystery: Jennifer Chiba In A Different Light by Alyson Camus

When Iman asked me to write about the positive things regarding Jennifer Chiba, it was a challenge, you can probably tell from all the previous posts.
I haven’t heard a lot of good things about her, but several people have said she helped Elliott when he was recovering from his drug addiction treatment at the end of 2002. She was even reported to monitor Elliott’s medication regiment and to be very involved into his clean up. Many people. close at the time, have claimed that his revival in the music business was the result of his relationship with J. Chiba. The two of them even established a foundation for abused children, to which he was planning to donate all the profits from his next record.

For some people who maintained a relationship with Elliott through his recovery J. Chiba was “sweet and watchful and affirming” with him, “helped in his rehabilitation” and “wouldn’t hurt a fly.” When asked about J. Chiba’s possible involvement in Elliott’s death, her psychiatrist, Dr. Abigail Stanton, said she was not capable of such a thing.
In an “Under the Radar” article (March, 2003), she is described as a loving girlfriend used to spending late hours with him in his studio as he refined his recordings endlessly.
She struggled herself with her own demons, went through a suicidal depression and had her own story of addiction. Despite all this she managed to become an art therapist and is now helping people with these same kinds of problems.
