Lobbycore by Helen bach

There seems to be a new trend evolving at least in the Hartford / Boston area. Lobby-core.

I have just experience 2 shows put on in the lobby of a theater. Devil Wears Prada did it in Wallingford CT and The Rocket Summer just did it in Worcester.

As I was speaking with Wyatt, Tour Manager of Rocket Summer, he voiced surprise at the location of the event. Venues are shutting down the traditional ‘hall’ or seated area and opting for a slightly elevated platform in the entry of the venue. Calling it ‘small stage’ or ‘dome’

Why is this?

Could it be smaller venues are scarce? No. Not here, there are plenty. Could it be promoters using same facilities rather than seeking other venues? Liquor licensing (these shows are usually all ages), insurance?

Regardless of the reason its an interesting idea. Makes sense, but a lobby is not acoustically designed for sound. So we as listeners suffer, its a flat ground so views are poor.

In the case of Rocket Summer, there was no ‘backstage’, thus the artist is left interviewing in a pizza shop.

On the plus side its intimate you can feel the closeness, but as an antisocial I really don’t want to snuggle up to some freak reeking of sweat and Old Spice.

In the time of great festivals, what an interesting twist to have this occurring as well.

I’m on the hunt to find more Lobby core shows…Ill keep you posted.
