rock nyc Comes Alive Episode Two: Mary Magpie Takes It To Avril Lavigne

The thing about being a teenager writing about not growing up is that they have no way to really empathize. There isn't that much to look backwards for enough to grasp the sense of loss. Not far from the surface of Avril's silly ode to eternal adolescence is the self-evident truth that not only will she but has she, and when her concept of high spirits is singing along to mopey dopey Radiohead, you gotta think it is beginning to dawn on her.

But, being just sixteen herself, this truth kinda misses Mary and, perhaps because she dislikes the vocal as much as I do, it only adds to Mary's disdain for the song. Something else, Mary was a fan of the "Sk8er Boi" girl from back in 2002 which would have made Mary… FIVE YEARS OLD. There is a sense of betrayal in Mary's reading here, and disdain.Best line "She's older than Adele… which is ridiculous".

I think Mary is right or wrong, it is a good song with creaky lyrics , poorly recorded. And if Mary thinks I'm wrong she should give a listen to "Beez & Honeys" superior cover, the singing isn't a whiny wretch and the beat is slowed down a little. The chorus is double tracked and punchier.

One more thing, growing up isn't that bad.
