Really? Who doesn’t love Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. And, sure, we wish Mary Travers was still alive and Paul Stokey won’t be there and we wish he was. But having that, Peter Yarrow at a Sunday 1pm show at the Highline Ballroom and for a great charity, the Gift Of Life Bone Yarrow Association? How can you miss it?
In the early 1960s, Peter Paul And Mary were the Pat Boone of folk, the mostly sweetened protest music with a cherry on top. But without them? They made living money for Woody Guthrie, Pete Seger, Bob Dylan, hell, even John Denver. Without Peter Paul and mary they would be living in a giant room on the Lower East Side. They made folk listenable and, more important, profitable, for the masses.
And a 1pm show on a Sunday. That’s the killer, right? That’s the money shot. So you have to shove some kids out of the way with your elbows for a closer look at “Puff The Magic Dragon”, “500 Miles”, “Leaving On A Jet Plane”. Good let’s do it.
The difference between Boone and PP&M is that Boone weaked and PP&M sweetend for a world not ready for Dylan’s croak. They bought Dylan time for us to follow it all up!
The show is at the Highline Ballroom on May 19th, $20 for children under 12, $35 for me. At 1pm. I am really psyched for this one, I never did get any closer to Peter, Paul And Mary than a PBS fundraiser here and there so I am especially excited. Let’s just hope Peter doesn’t sing “I Love Rock N Roll Music!”
