And then there was Muse. Of the three modern titans of rUK rock, U2, Coldplay and, and are the band least likely to. But in 2013 they are probably the best. As hard a rock band as you can possibly imagine, they are like Led Zep meets U2 in an Arena and when they get it 100% right, last years "Madness" for instance, they are proof that there are still big big big rock bands worth carrying about.
And even when they get it wrong, there is something so, well, so sincerely bombastic about them and with all the exploding stages and Arena rock trappings and borderline self-parody they are quite fun. Plus Matt Bellamy with his big nose and Hollywood life embraces his inner rock star with a passion.
I am going to see them for the first time on Monday, and a quick study of the set list sees nearly half of their latest The 2nd Law, an album I like fine, but only 4 off their smash hit break through Resistance. Not that I blame them of course. Anyway, the last one did get to #1 in the UK and # 2 in the States and listening to this playlist. Muse are an old fashioned band with all the trappings, Matt can sing falsetto, he can get way way up there, and so, of course, Led Zep come into play. And their lyrics are like an XBox 360 come to life: resistance is futile but we will fight them in the trenches.
