We all write about bands we'd really love to see but never have, well this is about a band I saw and never saw again. D'Angelo played a concert at the Bell House with Questlove on Monday. Sold out long before I even heard of it but it sounds killer. I've been gagging to see D'ANgelo since I caught his March 20th, 2000 concert at Radio City Music Hall, an awesome funk fest which, coming on the heels of sophomore effort Voodoo, left D'Angelo in the enviable position as the world's greatest soul singer. A position he hasn't relinquished despite not doing much of anything except putting on wait and getting arrested for solicitation.
At the time I thought that this what it must have been like seeing Teddy Pendergrass in his prime, all those white boys claiming to be long time fans weren't in the orchestra, it was me and thousands of screaming black women. Now, I don't think even the great Pendergrass could've been this good.
