Nicholas Hoult, so great all those years ago in the first season of the UK Skins, not to mention "About A Boy", is in the part of his career where he has leading roles in minor movies. the Jack the giant whatever thingy was just released to universal yawns which makes it better than "Warm bodies".
Although based on a book, it sounds like something a handful of junior execs at CAA put together in a failed bid to show they have whatever it might take:. teenage zombie falls in love! Twilight goes flesheating with a wink at the public. We would know it's based on a book any way because of a relentlessly tedious and unfunny voiceover by Hoult, who mostly grunts in zombie state.
In the not too distant future a zombie epidemic is calling armageddon time and the humans are fighting to the last, except Hoult falls in love with the bland beyond zombiedom human Teresa Palmer after eating her boyfriends brains and gaining his memories. And as love takes over, he begins to become human again. But her pop (as the Capulets) and his zombie pals (as the Montagues) don't understand at all.
Some gut wrenching body eating and some stomach churning over acting by the creepfest John Malkovich as Papa Juliet all adds up to a sweet but slight zombie movie that fails but honorably.
The soundtrack isn't bad, especially Bob Dylan on viny and a hahahahaaa Springsteen "Hugry Heart". Hey, the Mynabirds got on!
