Hear Ye: What rock nyc Is Listening To 2-19-13

1. Young Adult Friction – The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Shoegaze? I dunno, the vocals are way way up and the jingle jangle is resembles Belle And Sebastian circa "Seeing Other People". Maybe the band didn't want this, but that's a shame because this was the sound they should've pursued – Grade: A

2. I Feel The Earth Move – Carole King – I was, what, fourteen when I first heard this and wouldn't have known what it would like to feel the earth move if there was an earthquake, but Carole let me take an inspired guess and changed women in rock forever – Grade: A+

3. Too Far Gone – Emmylou Harris – Billy Sherril wrote it (and that is one reason why Costello covered it back in the day) but consider this as fodder for the Emmylou Harris could sing circles round Linda Ronstadt argument – Grade: A

4. She – Elvis Costello – "Don't forget, I'm also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her" – Grade: A

5. Dig, Lazarus, Dig – Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds – I doubt Nick will ever write a song this great again, but I doubt any one will – Grade: A+

6. Rise Above   – Tomas Doncker – Should pull us the rest of the winter singlehandedly – Grade: A

7. Stepson – Foals – I have already dismissed the new album but the drum sequencing keeps pulling me back in – Grade: C

8. If You're Feeling Sinister – Belle And Sebastian – I saw em at the Supper Club on this date, so long ago nobody knew what they looked like! – Grade: A

9. Ten Thousand Angels – Mindy McCready – Speaking of the devil… wow, that was some ride she went on – Grade: B+

10. Taken For A Fool – The Strokes – This is the one from MSG where Elvis Costello completely taught Julian how to sing it – Grade: A
