If I had my way I would turn back the clock a hell of alot further than 2007. But, 2007 was a pretty amazing year.. it was a year of For Science. I feel like an old Vet, sapping away about the good ol days.. problem is I didn’t even know of For Science then. I hate that by the way.
The album ‘Tomorrows Just Another Day’, is far from ordinary. The song ‘Even’ opens up this work with by far one of the coolest vocals ever. Just disturbed sounding, gruff but in the same way showing some sort of vulnerability a child’s voice lends depth to this ear grabbing sound.
Throughout the lp it seems like the vocalist is in a rush to catch up with the band. Intentional or not its off putting in a good way. The musical rhythm precedes the words. As if there are 2 separate tracks music and voice and they’re just off a smidgen. This simple act makes the music feel much more distorted, the slurring of the hurry is whats so unique.
Musically of course this entire cd is outstanding. Raw real punk with just enough skill to take it out of the norm and make it more artful.
What continuously yanks me back though is this nasal whining gruff vocal. Stepping away from the lyrics themselves and just listening on tone alone is contagious. And if I can just add that the female vocalist in ‘A Rage Against Heaven’ sounds adorably disgusted with her male companion. Love it!
To single out ‘The Last Word’, is a great example of vocalist doing his own thing. The hesitation proceeding the chorus is killer. The tone drop in the line ‘mattress on the floor’ in “Headaches’ is another.
How many other For Sciences are out there right now? I hate the thought…
I love music that has quirkiness to it For Science did. Did.
