Yves Saint Laurent After-Party Was Cut Short Because Of A Tragic Event

Hedi Slimane and Kim

I finally know why the Yves Saint Laurent after-party was interrupted around 2:30 am, and why Kim and the Created could not play their set. I thought it was due to some Palladium curfew policy, the party wasn’t supposed to last past 2 am after all, but no, it wasn’t this at all. Something far more dramatic occurred.

Kim, who was not even told why she could not play on Wednesday night, posted an explanation on her Facebook page today. She admits to have been very upset, but also says that she learnt on Thursday that ‘a kid had jumped from the balcony right as we started to play and was taken out on a stretcher, unconscious.’

I was front row, so I didn’t see any of the drama, and people on stage didn’t seem to have any idea of what was going on, but according to Kim, there were speculation that he was dead. Fortunately she was informed later on that the guy had survived his fall and was not paralyzed… he got very lucky because these balconies are quite high above the main floor.

However, Kim took the tragic incident very personally:

‘Tonight’s show in Long Beach will be my last show until I have time to revaluate my role as a performer and changes are made. It might be a few days, might be a week or more. I am not quitting- I am doing what I need to do to love playing music again,’ she wrote on Facebook.

‘I played in Paris the day after the terrorist attacks when I could have gone home. I play when I can barely move my neck and am head to toe in pain from giving literally all I have. I have put more into this event & it meant more to me than you know-but this tragedy has hit me in a way unlike anything in the past as my lyrics express how hard it is suffering with mental issues,’ she continued.

It is so kind of her to feel concerned by what happened to this guy, but why does she necessarily think it was a mental health issue? I saw so many people who had apparently visited the bar way too many times that I am not even surprised by the incident. I saw two guys dancing and moshing around me, and they fell down numerous times, they were basically drunk as pigs and could not stand up. I am not saying this is what happened but this is something to consider.

I have seen Kim and The Created a few times at the Echo, and they put on a fantastic and raucous show, Kim is a wild animal who gives everything she has during a performance and I am sure she had put a lot of work into this show, which was a fantastic opportunity for her and so many young bands… They were playing after Beck and Joan Jett, after a party attended by the who’s who in Hollywood. It was an occasion to be seen and mentioned by Vogue, or Hollywood Reporter and so many publications.

It is a sad aftermath, however Kim posted the picture above, showing her hanging out with designer and photographer Hedi Slimane, the creative director of Saint Laurent, … He is a very indie rock guy who has developed a long and lasting relationship with label Burger Records (he even took pictures at Burgerama in 2013) and has immersed himself in LA’s underground since his move from Paris in 2007. He has worked with Beck, but also with Chris Owens, the Mystic Braves, Grimes, Seth Bogart from Hunx and his Punx, Froth, Tame Impala, Curtis Harding, Cherry Glazerr, the Garden (the Burger band of twin brothers Wyatt and Fletcher Shears who have modeled for Saint Laurent)…’I am beyond grateful for Hedi Slimane who has given me so much and is an inspiration,’ added Kim. And I can only fully approve.
