Kanye West’s former bodyguard has claimed that working for the control freak musician ‘is ten times worse’ than what some might imagine.
Bodyguard Steve Stanulis, who was ‘fired by Mr West for speaking to the rapper’s wife Kim Kardashian’, opened up about the ‘bizarre’ demands made by his former boss as he revealed staff can only wear black, are not allowed to touch him and can expect to be fired within days.
Speaking to The Sun, the former Chippendale dancer claimed that The Life Of Pablo musician was ‘the most condescending person I have ever met’.
Speaking about the 38-year-old vocalist and producer’s behaviour towards those around him, Steve explained: ‘It is his world and everyone just exists within it. I don’t know how Kim stays married to him.’
The professional bodyguard quipped: ‘I had to look after his toddler daughter once and it was so much easier than babysitting the father. He’s ten times worse than what you see.
‘You just never knew what would trigger a meltdown.’
He explained how the rapper refused to press his own lift buttons, asked guards not to talk when he was present, sulked when forced to sit in the front seat of a car and ‘never’ apologised.
The bodyguard, who has also minded Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio and Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire, continued: ‘I was amazed by the amount of bizarre behaviour I saw in just two weeks. Imagine what must go on over a year.’
Steve described working with the Ultralight beam hitmaker as ‘like sleeping with your crazy ex-girlfriend. You say you are never going to go there again and then you do.’
MailOnline has contacted Kanye West’s representatives for comment.
Kanye, who is said to be worth £100 million, reportedly had the bodyguard fired at the star of the month flying into a jealous rage because Steve ‘chatted up’ his wife Kim.
But in an exclusive interview with Daily Mail Online, Steve denied he had made advances toward the TV star and declared: ‘Kanye needs to chill the f*** out.’
Stanulis’s departure from working alongside the rapper also served to provide an insight into the tensions that are an everyday part of the star’s life.
He said Kanye had an air of self importance when dealing with people who worked for him and could hardly be bothered to exchange more than a few words with his security detail.
The super-rich rapper stands accused of failing to offer his bodyguards even a glass of water when he dines out in top restaurants while being watched over.
The burly bodyguard admitted, however, that Monday’s sacking followed an earlier incident in February when he was warned off from speaking to celebratory mother-of-two Kardashian.
“ I was walking and the door was open and I happened to see Kim. I thought I’d ask her or the other security or assistant if there was a change of plan.”
But Stanulis, who is 5ft 11in and weighs 205lb, denied he had hit on her and only learned of the reason for his dismissal from members of Kanye’s entourage.
According to TMZ, Stanulis was not fired and Kanye has ‘no issue with bodyguards talking to Kim.’
But Stanulis, who has worked for Kanye on multiple occasions, says his firing followed his decision to travel up to the 36th floor of the hotel and engage with Kardashian about their plans for Monday’s Met Gala, which he believed had changed.
Stanulis said: ‘They (Kanye and his wife) were getting ready for Met Gala. I was sitting downstairs in the Waldorf, and it was around 6pm.
‘I got some information that they were looking to rent a Lamborghini, or something of that nature.’
He said they had called their driver down to see if he could obtain the sports car.
‘He tried, but he couldn’t as it was last minute. I went upstairs to see what was happening as we were supposed to be driving them
‘I just wanted to make sure we were ready when they were ready. I went up to the floor to the Presidential Suite.
‘I was walking and the door was open and I happened to see Kim. I thought I’d ask her or the other security or assistant if there was a change of plan.
‘As I was walking up to Kim and the room (within touching distance of Kardashian), Kanye walked by.
‘He came from around the corner and saw me walking towards the room. I turned around and said “Hey Mr West… how you doing?”
He said the superstar rapper failed to return the greeting, glared at him and walked past him.
Stanulis added: ‘He went to the door and slammed it. I thought that was okay. So I went back downstairs. I told the driver I had no idea what was going on.’
Within minutes one of Kanye’s senior staff called him and told him he would not be needed any more, effectively firing him on the spot.
After accompanying them to the Met Gala, he was due to handle their security the next day, but both tasks were removed.
He had been designated to drive with Kanye, his wife and their children and nanny to Teterboro airport in Bergen County, New Jersey, to see them off on a private jet to Los Angeles at 2pm on Tuesday.
‘But then I was told I wouldn’t be needed (the next day)’ he said.
Shortly after, he was told to standby as they were ready to leave the Waldorf for the Met Gala, but the couple slipped out without their hired guard and left him stranded.
He never saw them again and headed home to his wife Lisa and family.
‘They just left me and I had been waiting for them all day as their security’ he said.
Asked if he had been flirting with Kim Kardashian, he said: ‘Even if I wanted to, I never got the opportunity because it happened so fast.
‘The way he was situated (on the hotel corridor), maybe he thought I was there longer or walking up for a different reason.
‘Maybe it was a misunderstanding, but I didn’t have the opportunity.
‘I had no intention on hitting on Kim Kardashian. I am happily married. I got enough problems in the world and three young kids, so that was not my intent.
‘She’s a very beautiful girl, very attractive. But obviously it was just to see if they were going to get to the Met Gala at a particular time.’
Asked if he felt Kanye thought he had been hitting on his wife, he said: ‘I don’t know if he was or wasn’t. But if he was for whatever reason, he just has to chill out.
‘I mean he has everything you could possibly want in the world…money, power, fame, a beautiful wife and talent. He has to pull back.
‘I’d like to think this was all a misunderstanding. But if this was the reason, to be where he is and to be that insecure, it is mind boggling to me.’
Stanulis said he had worked around 15 days this year for Kanye – ten in February at fashion week and five last week for the Met Gala, both in New York City.
During his New York Fashion Week stint, he was told to keep away from Kim after Kanye had seen him speaking to her.
He explained that they were at a fashion house in Wooster Street, Soho, and she was with their two-year-old daughter North West and the newly born son, Saint West.
Stanulis said he approached Kardashian to introduce himself to her.
He said: ‘It would be natural thing to do and say ‘Hey I am Steve and I am an ex-police officer and I am going to be looking after you”. ‘
‘It was a normal introduction. She was sweet and she was nice. It was super small talk and when she walked away one of the handlers in the fashion studio, came up to me and said ‘We don’t want you too close to Kim’.
‘I said that was ok and didn’t mean no disrespect at all. ‘
He said because of the public setting and the people in the vicinity when he approached Kanye’s wife the first time, he was surprised if that incident could have had caused jealousy.
But he added: ‘If I am a handsome guy, a Chippendale and in a decent shape and he is threatened by that…would it surprise me? No.’
He said Kanye’s rude attitude toward him at his first hiring did not put him off as he needed to earn the money, and the rate was set at around $300 dollars a day or $30 dollars an hour.
He said: ‘I don’t think he ever said two words to me. I would go to a restaurant with him and watch him to make sure nobody was bothering him. Not once was I offered a glass of water or a soda. That was never in his mindset.’
He said he had found working for the rapper ‘traumatic’ and was amazed at the insecurity of the Atlanta born multi-millionaire super star.
‘I had heard through the grape vine that Kanye was tough to deal with and he went through a lot of security.
‘I was told before I took the work that I had to be thick skinned and prepared for anything because the littlest thing could trigger him.’
He said the first introduction was warm but Kanye had several ‘quirks’ which rankled the bodyguard.
He said Kanye didn’t like the door being opened for him and could lose it if his bodyguards were in TV shots with him.
Kanye also had been known to jump into a car with his entourage and leave his bodyguard to find a cab and follow.
‘He’s a bit condescending and when I was in the studio with him, people were walking on egg shells around him. It is almost like he can turn on a dime any second. ‘
On one occasion last February, Kanye got angry over a late-night food delivery and rowed with a member of his inner circle on the telephone and stormed out of his music studio.
Stanulis, who has one-year-old twins, said he went after the angry rapper in his own car and caught up with him on the West Side Highway near speeding traffic.
But the rapper demanded that Stanulis remove the two baby seats in the rear of the car before he got in.
The bodyguard said he refused and eventually Kanye relented and got into his vehicle for a ride back to the studios.
‘There is a right way and wrong way to talk to people
‘Just because you have status, doesn’t give you the right to talk to people in a certain way.
‘I work with Saudi royal family members and when you sit with them and whatever they eat, you eat. They tip you and its great.
‘But with this guy, you could be working with him for 17 hours and sitting in a restaurant with him. You would think he would say, ‘Hey you want something to drink?’, but it was nothing. It just blew my mind.
‘I would say that I have been blessed in my life to meet all different types of people in all different walks of life from super A-list to homeless people when I was a police officer in a project.
‘But I would say he is probably the most self -absorbed person I have ever met in my life.
He added: ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians… unfortunately, I was keeping up with Kanye.
‘It was cool the first day with seeing them on the TV and in the tabloids… but after a day or two the novelty wears off absolutely and it is a job.
‘And 17 hours in, I couldn’t care less if it was Marilyn Monroe. It is about getting paid, but it wasn’t a high-paying job.’
He said he should have decided not to work for the Wests again this week, after his experiences of last February.
He said they left without saying thank you for his ten days of security work.
‘I took Kanye and the two babies to the airport. He never said ‘good job, thank you, I appreciate it’ …nothing.
‘He just left me standing there. I wanted to spit on the floor as that was how annoyed I was.’
He said he understood that his staff needed jobs and a salary, but added: ‘But I don’t know how people can work like that 24/7.
‘People like his handlers make excuses for him, but there is no excuse for that.’
He summed up his time with his famous charges as : ‘Forgettable, traumatic, not worth it and disappointed.’
He added: ‘I didn’t hit on Kim. Kanye has so much in his life. He should be thankful and be grateful for people who work so hard to keep him safe and happy.’
