XXXTentacion’s Case And The Hip Hop Scene

The chaotic scene during XXXtentacion time slot at Rolling Loud

I wished I had recorded this crowd at Rolling Loud fest, this crowd screaming a  bizarre slogan, and encouraged by a whole gang jumping around the stage and in the pit. At 8pm on Sunday evening, rapper XXXTentacion was scheduled to perform on the Dab stage, but he never came because he was in jail. I knew nothing about his story, and was surprised to hear all this agitation and people screaming ‘Free XXX’ in repeat as if the guy was a victim of some injustice.

However when you read about the timeline of the events surrounding his imprisonment last Friday, it is unbelievable. It is unbelievable that his slot was maintained at Rolling Loud, it’s unbelievable that people were rooting for him with such passion. I had already looked into this story, but after reading this new article posted by Spin magazine today, the world of hip hop appears more incomprehensible than ever. Are this people ready to sacrifice any morality to make money? It seems it is the case, because we are not talking small fry here:

‘between May and October of 2016 X repeatedly beat her [the woman he was dating and who later accused him]and strangled her, once held a knife to her throat, and after learning she was pregnant, beat her so severely she couldn’t recognize herself in the mirror’, reads the article. ‘X allegedly held the woman captive in his apartment, confiscating her phone and refusing to let her go to a hospital until her face healed.’ He was also detained for ‘a 2015 home invasion, robbery, and aggravated battery case.’ But there is more, ‘At a San Diego show in June, X was knocked unconscious mid-song by an audience member who rushed the stage, and in the ensuing chaos, one concert-goer suffered multiple stab wounds.’

It seems that his life is a long series of terrible fights, his entire existence is surrounded by violence since his early childhood, but does this justify such out of control behavior? This other article in Pitchfork gives all the details of his girlfriend’s deposition, and it is horrifying, it is a long series of violent behavior that could only come from a deranged and deeply disturbed man:

‘XXXTentacion left the room and returned with two grilling implements—a “barbecue pitchfork” and a “barbecue cleaner,” she said—and told her to pick between them, because he was going to put one of them in her vagina.’

‘When asked during the deposition to “pinpoint the days he threatened to kill you,” the reported victim responded, “Well, when we lived in Orlando, it was literally like every day.”

‘Around this time, he tried cutting her hair, and he held her head under running water in the bathtub.’

‘He also wanted to cut out my tongue because I was singing the song,”

it’s also unbelievable she kept getting back with him, it was apparently a very disturbing situation by both accounts.

In any case, all the details are out there, it didn’t take me long to learn more, and it is alarming to say the least. Nevertheless, this guy is not only receiving the support of his fans but the accolade of the hip hop community:

Last January, ‘A$AP Rocky rapped a few bars from “Look at Me” before proclaiming “Free my n*gga X!’… ‘Danny Brown quoted lyrics from XXXTentacion’s and collaborator Ski Mask the Slump God’s “RIP Roach” on Twitter…. And he was even recommended by Kendrick Lamar, xxxtentacion has 5.3 M followers on Instagram, despite having posted only one post, so this says a lot about the hype surrounding the guy.

Why would people want him to be free knowing all this? Actually, two days ago, TMZ announced X will be released from jail to fulfill his contractual obligations while on house arrest, as record imprint Caroline, a subsidiary of Capitol Records, has offered him a $6 million record contract last October. According to this Genius page, he was the most popular new artist in 2017, people can get enough of him, he is now an (almost) free and rich man. Who cares if he beats the shit out of his girlfriend, he is a great rapper. Tell this to Matt Lauer, Harvey Weinstein, Charlie Rose, and the others, the hip hop world functions on an entire different level.
