Wild Riot And Beat Lab Present: A Spring Break Mini-Fest At The Satellite, Monday April 30th 2018

Plasmic

A mini festival on a Monday night? You are kidding right? It’s a school night, the first of the week, and people can’t stay up that late… it was nevertheless the deal at the Satellite last Monday night, with 8 bands playing passed my bed time, if I still have one these days…

I stayed late to see LacisteMariGo, Plasmic, Ugly SweatersSherif Serag & The Time Travelers, Freddy Spacer, but had to leave before the 2 last bands if I wanted just a few hours of sleep… Tuesday mornings suck when you only sleep for 4 hours, so my apologies to The Electric West and Blade of Grass, 2 bands which must have continued this mini festival way past an acceptable Monday night bedtime.

This Spring Break Mini Fest was organized by Wild Riot and Beat Lab, and judging by the first performers, I thought the tone would be mostly electronica, but the lineup was truly eclectic, even composed of a lot of bands I had never heard about.

Laciste was an ambient electronic duo marrying beats with synth swirls and Pauline Laciste’s calm and ethereal voice. Some of their tracks were on the dance-y side but mostly their smooth soundscapes were multi-influenced.

MariGo was also an electronic duo with a female singer but another bandmate on drums, and once again they were drawing their inspiration from all over the place from R&B to hip hop and electronic noise, bringing many exotic layers, eerie vocals and creative beats in their already complex mix.

I already knew Plasmic for tearing up the dance floors at Sex Cells, and the pink feminist gave another badass performance with her aggressive beats and operatic howl. But first of all, Plasmic has very memorable songs with tender hooks that tend to nest inside your head for a long time, She sings with a loud assurance playing her keytar, and other keyboards, and all alone, she builds a hot pink pop world filled with her enchanted loops and the rebellious songs of her new EP ‘Validation Nation’.

Since the festival was bringing all kind of fun, Ugly Sweaters had this retro rock ‘n’ roll fun party with power chords and youthful boy-girl harmonies. They were the more straightforward pop rock band of the night with plenty of guitar action flirting with chaos on stage, a touch of British invasion and even a cover of ‘The Kids are Alright’.

The five-piece band Sherif Serag & The Time Travelers had plenty of rock ‘n’ roll heart and a frontman singing with an uncommon passion and a deeply emotional scream over heartfelt and furious rock ballads. They were a full band with a wide-screen sound that didn’t seem to have any limit, blending exotic flavors with familiar and explosive guitars, roaring into passionate bluesy rock anthems.

Freddy Spacer (and his spacers) was a visual and sonic act with live dancers and elaborate choreography over plenty of vivid tribal beats and stroboscopic lighting. Beside the infectious exotic dance, there was a lot of things to enjoy in their multi media set, soulful vocals, funky bass, electronic beats, psychedelic vibes which were twisting genres into a bright and vibrant cosmic dancefloor experience.

Hopefully, I will get another chance to see The Electric West and Blade of Grass , a mini festival on a Monday night is still a crazy idea.
