Why Is Everyone Dying?

The Ronettes Move Their Hips

In the worst start of a year for musical deaths since 2016, music stars are dying.

2016 was worse because, at the very least, the deaths in 2016 revolved around people in their late 60s, early 70s, and 2022 is about ten years later.

In early 2016 we lost

David Bowie

Glenn Frey

Paul Kantner

Maurice White

Keith Emerson

Phife Dawg

Merle Haggard

Leonard Cohen

In 2022, the names aren’t as eye popping for music, Bob Saget was a major comedic actor but he wasn’t a rock star, Sidney Poitier one of the greatest actors of his generation but also not a pop star. Michael Lang was the man behind Woodstock who couldn’t get his mojo back, James Mtume (remember “Juicy Fruit”?) was heavily sampled in hip hop, Stephen Lawrence (he wrote music for “Sesame Street”), Marilyn Bergman (she wrote the lyrics to “The Windmills Of Your Mind” and “The Way We Were”), and yesterday Ronnie Spector…

Speaking of death, we also lost Wanda Young of The Marvelettes on Christmas Day, 2021.
