Watch The New Video for Outernational’s Single ‘El Desafiante’

Outernational

Shame on me, I had a bit lost track of Outernational, the Tom-Morello-produced, politically-engaged rock band… A month ago, they actually released a new video for their single ‘El Desafiante’, via Firebrand Records, and I hadn’t noticed… As it popped up in my Facebook feed, this is the occasion to catch up with them. In these troubled times when a guy who could be the next US president wants to build a wall between the US and Mexico, when police union wants to boycott Quentin Tarantino’s films (and worst)  because he dared to protest against police brutality, we need a band like Outernational more than ever.

When it comes to social and racial injustice, there is so much to do that it is discouraging, but not for them: the new video, which features Mexican string trio Villalobos Brothers is ‘inspired by the memory and the defiant spirit of the 43 student-teachers who were disappeared by the government in Ayotzinapa, Mexico’. Needless to say, the track, which means the defiant one, is a rebellious, fist-in-the-air chant, with reggae-to-cumbia rhythms and of course Miles Soley’s fierce vocals, mixing Spanish and English lyrics as the band often does. The images are strong and bold, blending Miles walking down the streets, with views of protesters and drawings of the people who have disappeared. They premiered the video on Rolling Stone and Morello repeated his admiration for the young group:

‘We are proud to have Outernational as the latest signees to Firebrand Records. Their first single, ‘El Desafiante,’ is a clarion call to action on and off the dance floor. Released on the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of the 43 Mexican student activists, Outernational forges elements of the Clash, Rage Against the Machine and Calle 13 into a ferocious and uncompromising new ‘future rock.’’

‘This song was inspired by the memory and the defiant spirit of the 43 students who were disappeared by the government in Ayotzinapa, Mexico,’ added Solay. ‘But it could easily be about any of our countless sisters and brothers across the planet, victims of the oppressive systems that rule the world; whether victims of U.S. drones in Yemen and Afghanistan, the North African migrants drowned in the Mediterranean Sea or Black and Latino people killed by police in the United States.’

This is certainly a universal message, and sinceHollywood wants to sell us Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Joe Strummer, can’t they realize they have the real thing in front of them?
