Warbly Jets, Starcrawler, Gutxi Biband At The Bootleg, Thursday March 9th 2017

Warbly Jets

Who said rock & roll was dead? Not me, and not you if you were at the Bootleg theater on Thursday night. Four bands played through the evening, they were young and younger than you can imagine and they rocked through the night with pure madness.

At this point the members of Starcrawler probably think I am stalking them, but I was invited at the show by another band, and they were headlining once again! I have seen them 4 times already in the past months, and they have to be one of the most hardworking bands right now. These rock warriors played an amazing set as usual, and at this point I have a warning for any band inviting them as opener. Don’t get me wrong all the bands on Thursday night were really fantastic, but Starcrawler may steal the show at any moment. For kids of their age, they are between 16 and 21, they have a vision, a pure and precise punk rock vision, raw and dirty, unapologetic and truly terrifying, looking at Arrow de Wilde’s face, her freaking-out full-body shaking and various contortions. I have said it before, they are resurrecting the good old days of punk and glam with Iggy-I-wanna-be-your-dog pauses, ferocious guitars, blood and chaos. Gimme danger anytime with Starcrawler, they may play a few more shows soon, before their Ryan Adams-produced album drops at one point. I just wonder how they will be able to capture this maddening and intense energy on record, it sure gonna be a challenge as a performance by the quartet (Henri Cash on guitar, Arrow de Wilde on vocals, Austin Smith on drums, and Tim Franco on bass) is sure to give you a case of rock and roll high fever for hours.

Gutxi Biband was a London-based band with a frontman of Guinean and Spain-Basque origin, and if that already sounds crazy, his brand of rock was more 70’s blues-psychedelic inspired than anything else. The sound was on fire with shades of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix and no, he is probably not your next Lenny Kravitz. His 16 minutes of dirty-sexy rock’ n’ roll on platform shoes and flared pants were a blast and unleashed a formidable energy in the Bootleg, it’s probably hard to reinvent the 70’s, what’s left to say? But Gutxi Biband had their own thing, and it was beautiful and wild.

The Warbly Jets had a residency at the Satellite in January, and the night I checked them out, the club was packed to the roof. Thursday night was their first headline show after their residency, and they demonstrated once again they were ready for the rock star status. Warbly Jets think big, big rock show with an explosive sound, even some dramatic electronic introduction and an impressive lightning,… yeap they are ready for the arena and their pop rock songs are ready for the sing along.

The music was stormy and layered, rocking hard at times, mixing poppy hooks with noise rock, wrapped around frontman-singer-guitarist Samuel Shea’s jaded morose delivery. There were reminiscences of Oasis at times – and Shea’s vocals help a lot in this department – or may be the Verve if the English band had been rocking harder. And since one of their songs, ‘Alive’ was picked as the Spring Summer ’17 campaign song for Liam Gallagher’s clothing company Pretty Green, I may be onto something.

There was also a part of electro-psych-dream vibe on other songs and that’s why I mentioned Tame Impala in my last review. Warbly Jets may be a combination of all the above with a good looking young frontman, Samuel Shea has a cherubic face! As it was the case before, they owned the place with some great live action, and like true rock stars in the making they had a big finale with a special guest, vocalist Camille Wyatt, who brought a lot of soul in the last song ‘Keep Pushin’. That was a show to make you fully alive (also the title of one of their songs apparently) with sonic layers going in many directions and a larger than life vision, as rock n roll should be.
