Video Premiere: Spencer Robinson And The Wolf Spiders’ ‘Drink Gasoline And Spit Fire’

Spencer Robinson and The Wolf Spiders

Following their first EP ‘Standing at the End of the World’, Spencer Robinson and The Wolf Spiders released their album ‘Beneath the Surface’ last year, and their new video, for their song ‘Drink Gasoline and Spit Fire’, is premiering today on Rock NYC.

With this black and white mini movie, they are obviously following their favorite dark theme, with a lugubrious atmosphere and a menacing tone. The song, which seems to have been written after an alcohol-fueled evening and a few bar fights, is a badass piece of rock ‘n’ roll, with Spencer Robinson’s deep drawl growling over Cramps-like guitars and steady pounding drums. The video manages to build an unsettling ambiance in less than 3 minutes while some scary characters spy on the band outside, and it gives you a good idea of the overall dark mood of the band’s music. However, despite its serious tone, mysterious setting and film noir imagery, I should also say that the band is a lot of fun live, while reviving a sort of bleak Americana with whiskey fights and the taste of blood or gasoline at the tip of your tongue.

Beside Spencer Robinson on vocals and guitar, Johnny DeVilla is on guitar, Tom Hernandez on drums, and Piper Ingram on bass. ‘Beneath the Surface’ is available from Rusty Knuckles Music, and the video for ‘Drink Gasoline and Spit Fire’ was directed by Sean Riley.
