Vice President Mike Pence Gets Booed And Lectured At Hamilton

Hamilton’s cast

Last night, Vice president Mike Pence attended a performance of ‘Hamilton’, the critically acclaimed musical about the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton… The musical, which has broken all kinds of records, retells history with hip hop in mind while historical figures like Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington are portrayed by black and Hispanic actors.

I haven’t seen the play, Iman saw it back in April, but anything I have read and saw about it, tells me one thing: What was Pence thinking? With his anti-gay agenda and a government getting whiter and whiter at the minute, why was he even interested to attend a Broadway musical which is revisiting history with a diversity banner written all over it? Isn’t it what Pence hates the most?

After the show, actor Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, had a few words, directly addressed to Pence, as he was walking out of the auditorium.

‘You know, we have a guest in the audience this evening, and Vice President-elect Pence, I see you walking out, but I hope you will hear us just a few more moments. There’s nothing to boo here, ladies and gentlemen. There’s nothing to boo here. We’re all here sharing a story of love. We have a message for you, sir. We hope that you will hear us out.’

‘Vice President-elect Pence, we welcome you, and we truly thank you for joining us here at ‘Hamilton: An American Musical.’ We really do. We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us. All of us. Again, we truly thank you truly for (sharing) this show, this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men and women of different colors, creeds and orientations.’

Pence left the place before the end of the message, but the Associated Press reports that he stood in the hallway and heard the full message. At the same time, several videos were posted on Twitter showing audience members booing Pence as he was walking to his seat.

I still can’t make sense of Pence going to see Hamilton, was it pure provocation? He knew he would not be welcome, although he probably didn’t expect a lecture, but I fail at finding a good, well-intentioned reason from his part. After all, according to his support to conversion therapy for LGBT, he would probably agree to electrocute half of the cast involved in any Broadway production!

Today, Trump supporters and republicans are arms in the air, asking for apologies,… Trump even tweeted:

‘The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!’

‘Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!’

The cast was never rude and had all the rights to speak up their mind. Just listen to the video below, this was not harassment, this was a very polite and courteous statement to a man who has truly harassed the LGBT community and wants to take their rights away. This is a man who signed a bill that allow Indiana businesses to discriminate against LGBT customers, man who signed one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country… he is the rude intolerant homophobic sexist bigot. Do republicans want to reduce our freedom of expression? Does Trump have the slightest idea of what rude is, he is asking for apologies when he has insulted the whole country, with the exception of white rich men… Is this a joke or a nightmare?

Meanwhile Trump was settling 3 Trump University lawsuits for $25 million, and may be this ‘Pence at Hamilton’ thing was just a distraction from the real story on Friday.

I think you could be right about the smoke and mirror ruse used as the trump university debacle ended so nice and neatly when it never should have happened that way. I don’t believe, in fact, that any diversion is needed as, this man gets away with anything and everything…has done all of his “working” life and it amazingly continues into his presidency or as long as the idiots who run this God forsaken country allow him to continue to carry on doing as he pleases. Can he truly be exempt from laws that govern you and me? That would make him a ruler and not a commander in chief, immune to the laws necessary to keep the worker bees in line. We all heard the address: Brandon Dixon was as courteous and respectful as he could be under the circumstances (the circumstances being that his liberties and rights are in danger of being severely curtailed or removed). The cast demonstrated what our first Amendment Constitutional right looks like: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” Trump says this is unacceptable and that they need to “apologize.” Bullshit. They were perfectly within their rights to do as they did. I do feel folks in the audience should have contained themselves, however. Not booing would have shown maturity at best, but, in light of the consistent cursing and booing during trump’s vile campaign, it has become sickeningly acceptable behavior. There is a double standard in the air which sets a most dangerous precedent for the citizens of our nation who do not think the way this “movement” does. You speak out and you pay the price. Also, my feeling is that some asshole lackey thought this ruse would serve a double purpose for Pence to be in attendance, pandering to the LGBTQ community in a most blatant and bizarre fashion. He was probably vomiting silently into his mouth as the show progressed. He despises people like the performers he watched on Friday. It was a bone thrown to this group of diverse actors in a kind of quasi-solidarity. Trump’s tweet began an onslaught of his cult throwing out threats and violent offerings. What does this say for the next four years. “This is not-America…sha-la-la-la-la.”
