“This Chicago quintet’s sweet-tart guitar pop splits the difference between defiant and melancholic, with Stef Smith’s lilting soprano and Paul Stolz’s rolling basslines serving as a fulcrum for chiming riffs and gently pointed lyrics about alienation and disappointment, both self-inflicted and not.” – Rolling Stone

“[Must Be Nice] is a catchy slice of indie-pop, the punchiness of which is undercut by Smith’s self-conscious lyrics” – NPR
Chicago’s garage-pop tour de force Varsity released a new video for their vibrant single “A Friend Named Paul.” Debuted on Billboard today, the video colorfully encapsulates the track’s bright melody and contemplative lyrics in a schoolgirl’s daydream about her synchronized swimming instructor.
The band recently wrapped up a national tour in support of their critically acclaimed sophomore album, Parallel Person, released earlier this year on Babe City Records.
Since forming in 2013, Varsity has produced a number of digital 7” releases and has shared bills with acts including Alvvays, Courtney Barnett, The Hold Steady, Porches and Car Seat Headrest. Following their explosive hit “So Sad, So Sad,” which has over 14 million streams, they have unleashed new album singles “Must Be Nice,” “A Friend Named Paul” and “Krissy” to critical acclaim.
Parallel Person is an instantly catchy, cathartic indie-pop record featuring the distinct vocals of singer/keyboardist Stephanie Smith met with infectious guitar melodies and exciting rhythm. The new collection brings their music to new depths that express themes of the uphill battle of isolation, popularity and relatable artistic frustration that frequently occurs in their Chicago lives.
