Comment: Say what you will about Americans, they know a good Christmas tune when it isn’t sung by Michael Buble. Of all the difficult things to do in the world, writing a perennial, original Christmas hit is among the most difficult. There is, of course, the love that dare not speak its name: Phil Spector. But once you get past him, it is hard. Mariah Carey didn’t just write it and sung it, she did the impossible. She added a song that will be on playlists, along with Burl Ives, for all time. Who could ask for more this December?
