TVON: Ted Lasso’s Christmas Special… And More

https://youtube.com/watch?v=5MCyoPfPspk
Christmas, please come home

The Ted Lasso Christmas Special: After writing just last week that “Ted Lasso” was over with two iffy episodes, and then a racist disaster (here), episode four of season two is a masterpiece of sweetness and good vibes. Look, life is simple: due to a series of once in a billion years scientific conundrum, life can exist on the planet earth. And due to our ancestors hunting requirements, evolution gave us memory. Once we got memory, we realized that people we knew disappeared off the earth and tried to make sense of it and religion was born. Fast forward two million years and we are at the Ted Lasso episode, a reworking of a personal fave Christmas movie, “Love Actually”. Even if God doesn’t exist, we can still believe in her… why not? And if we can believe in her then we must be self-deluding romantics attempting to find a reason that (probably) doesn’t exist for our life. If you are that much of a romantic, you will do what I did: watch the Christmas with a certain joy in the gentleness, and intelligence of a daydream world where kindness is the currency for life. Or, as Jamie Tartt puts it: “God bless me, everyone” – A (on Apple+)

The Suicide Squad – Idris Elba is a great star, he is the equal of every action man from Daniel Craig to Liam Neeson, and he carries this DC Comics superhero, er, supervillain, movie on his back -almost, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is pretty excellent as always. Some big stars bite the bullet before the SS saves the world again – B- (on HBO Max)

The White Lotus – the drama about rich people in a hotel resort acting badly is the anti-Ted Lasso, everybody has the worst intentions. It is like “Fantasy Island” for assholes – C (on HBO Max)

Real Time With Bill Maher – quite possibly the most annoying political talkie around, the last episode was simply dreadful. Maher had zero to say to Martin Short and Steve Martin (plugging a movie on Hulu), Donna Brazile (from USA Today) is insipid and too cute for her own good and Michael Moynihan (from Vice) looks as though he is coming off a three month coke and booze bender. Maher got one thing right, many of those cancel addicts are acting in bad faith (on HBO Max) – C
