TVON: Hawkeye Has Himself A Merry Little Christmas And M(ore)CU

Here Is How It Goes In The MCU Since The Pandemic:

Legends – C

Wandavision – A

The Falcon And The winter Soldier – B+

Loki – A-

Black Widow – B

What If… – B

The Legend Of The Six Rings – B+

Eternals – C-

Hawkeye – A-

Spiderman No Way Home – Er, I Haven’t Seen It Yet…

The first two episodes of “Wandavision” stands as the MCU’s single greatest moments, better than the original Ironman, better than all three Spidermen and even the excellent into the Spider-Verse from 2018. While “Wandavision” had to fall to earth, and did, and Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany were excellent as Wanda Maximoff and Vision. Especially Olsen who gave a devastating portrayal of a woman in mourning.

It’s not that “Hawkeye” -the story of Cliff Barton (the James Dean of The Avengers, Jeremy Renner) handing over the reigns of the Hawkeye franchise to Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld)- isn’t good, it is good, and the Christmas in New York City isn’t welcome, maybe especially to us who love it here even while the fresh air is trying very hard to kill us, it is more than welcome. Our math is 1 -yes, maybe you’ll die of Covid but 2 – at least you’ll die in New York City. The problem of this Avenger and soon to be Avenger on the streets of Manhattan is that it is such rarified air (I guess that’s true of “Home Alone” as well). It takes place post-Endgame, post the five year jump. Barton, who with the return of his family, has retired and is taking his children to a Broadway show and a week in NYC while his wife awaits at home to celebrate Christmas. But Kate Barton (rich kid daughter -I toldja) has picked up Ronin’s uniform (during the five year disappearance of half the population Clint had become a vigilante), puts it on and goes out to fight the bad guys (exceedingly close to home), the return of Ronin causes those wanting revenge to search him out and the late Black Widow’s kid sister Yelena (Florence Pugh) returning to kill him.

It all must be the Christmas of 2019 or (maybe?) 2022 because it sure ain’t 20 or 21, NYC is a state of shock as shows and plans are abruptly cancelled everyday. I was at 30 Rock for an NBChristmas party before Omicron kicked our ass and the scenes at the skate rink, including a spectacular decline and fall of the tree with Hawkeye in it, is really thrilling after being so close to the real thing. I would LOVE to read the product placement deal between NBC and ABC, I would have loved to hear the negotiation. Certainly, New Yorkers have always considered itself ground zero for Christmas shows (if you haven’t seen it in awhile, try Natalie Wood and Edmund Gund in the 1947 masterpiece), “Home Alone” and more. We all know “Die Hard” should have been in NYC, though it took till the third entry in the series for the powers that be to wake up.. From Macy’s Santa arrival on Thanksgiving to the ball dropping at Time’s Square, nothing compares. The decision to put Hawkeye in the middle of New York City was a killer (based upon the 2012 comic book series to a great extent), and if the bow and arrows and fights galore don’t do it, then seeing NYC -usually a masculine city- during the season is where it does its hair, puts on its lipstick, and invites all the other genders to join in, should make the rest of the world sick with envy, even as we wait for the variation that kills us.

This is all leading to the new Hawkeye and The Young Avengers…
