TVON: BBC gets haunted and then gets Who’d – 11-11-21

Ghosts BBC: Three seasons in and I just don’t feel it. The problem on this comedy is that the laws governing the afterlife (wearing the same clothes you died in, specific ghostly powers) are too complex and as a sitcom, it doesn’t really work… there is a CBS reboot which I haven’t seen but looks identical from a distance. A couple inherit a haunted house and after an attempted murder by one of the ghosts, the wife can see dead people are all over the place. Charlotte Ritchie, the former singer with All Angels, is very charming indeed in the lead role – B

The Sparks Brothers – when the Brothers Spark hit big in the UK with “This Town’s Not Big Enough For Both Of Us” we all assumed the glammy duo were two parts novelty and one part heartthrob. Fifty years later they are a legendary duo of quirk pop and filmmaker Edgar Wright does for them what Todd Haynes singularly failed to do for the Velvet Underground – B+

Blade Runner: The FInal Cut – I’ve seen Blade Runner in every iteration, and while I agree A.I. Rutger Hauer’s intense humanity is a scene stealer, Harrison Ford’s film noir bounty hunter is as dark a Raymond Chandler creation as Philip K. Dick ever came up with – A+

Inside Job – an adult animated piece of conspiracy theory jostling that doesn’t really hit – C+

Squid Game – the Asian-Pacific via South Korea critique of modern day capitalism as a gameshow with deadly consequences, is powerful during its first season (and an International hit), but I bet next season they do a WestWorld and explain it all and kill the magic – B+

Oceans 11 – stands up pretty well though Brad Pitt eating in every scene gets old… – A

Dracula Has Risen From The Grace – the final Hammer Studios Christopher Lee Dracula plus babes with boobs is pretty good – B

The Return Of The king Extended Edition – I struggled through the first two movies in 2020, but I am stuck half an hour into this one. Of all the problems, Elijah Wood’s Frodo is a twinkling, over weaned jerk is worst – C

What We Do In The Shadows – with the third season over, we can anoint “WWDITS” vampire sitcom as reality show for vampires in Staten Island as the best show on television And both Matt Berry and Mark Proksch deserve Emmys, actually everybody on the show deserves Emmys. I can’t wait till Season Five when energy vampire Mark, I mean Cliff Robertson, is reincarnated as a baby – A

Dr.. Who Series 13 – I don’t think the thirteenth Dr. Who is bad because Jodie Whittaker, the twelfth incarnation, is a woman, Peter Capaldi wasn’t great either, but because the otherness perfected by # 11, Matt Smith, where his befuddled thinking is part of his alienness, is simply mixed thoughts with Jodie. Also, can everyone stop making her so fallible? Why are all the friends back chatting her? Series 13 is also a six show serial of timey wimey yet another war to save the entire universe or more stuff. It comes awful close to Daniel Craig-ing the Doctor. Let heroes be heroes – C+
