H to the Izz-o, V to the Izz-A: Four years between albums, and between singles except for a (bad) protest song here, and a (less than spectacular) featured verse there, Jay Z has been visible and invisible at the same time since 2013. Hip Hop waits for no man and the scene has gone from dubstep to trap, and Drake has been anointed the King Of Rap. My take on Hov is that he hasn’t been the same man since The Black Album. In 2004, Jay Z was named president of Def Jam Records and the subsequent short lived retirement from recording and live shows (highlighted by his retirement gig, the exceptional “Fade To Black” at MSG). He returned in 2006 with the bad Kingdom Come and followed it with the spotty American Gangster. Never the same, unless you consider “Empire State Of Mind” the same. The first time I saw Jay Z live was at MSG with Busta Rhymes, thy were opening for Puff Daddy in 1997 (aka a year before “Hard Knock Life”) . I’ve seen him countless times since but he hasn’t been around for a coupla years so The Meadows gig on Friday, September 5th, 2017, is a must see. Now comes the ads in the picture above, from TidalHifi, apparently announcing a new album. It’s been awhile, I’d be fascinated to see if he can reclaim his crown.
Concerts: Donovan at the Cutting Room last night, was in pretty good shape. Nice to hear some of these songs live and good to see the Hurdy Gurdy man in relatively ship shape and able to entertain with just a guitar and a harmonica he didn’t blow once. Grade: B
More Concerts: The Jay Z the Meadows put me in in a panic… but I rejiggered my Jigga and…
September 7th – Roger Waters
September 11th – Paul McCartney
September 15th – Jay Z
And still undecided on September 16th for young Gorillaz.
Terrorism: ISIS are on a roll alright, attacking Iran? 12 dead. Wow, these guys are bringing the pain and how.
More Terrorism: The US are a bunch of blabbermouths. The incredibly stupid President insulted the Mayor Of London after misreading the mayor’s statement? How is that possible? How could he have misread Sadiq Khan’s statement to Londoners not to alarmed with the additional police presence on the streets with not to be alarmed with terrorism. and insulted him on Twitter. Meanwhile, the remarkably self serving New York Mayor claimed that New York was better at policing against terrorism than London. Of course, this is complete nonsense. You can’t police against a man in a car… it isn’t possible. So shut your idiot face.
FBI: Christopher Wray, a former U.S. assistant attorney general now in private practice, is Trump’s choice for head of FBI. apparently Wray is used to scandal which should come in handy.
New Music: Radical Action to Unseat the Hold of Monkey Mind is the live in Japan King Crimson box set from 2016, now available for streaming. An acquired taste (not unlike lark’s tongue) but KC are well and above the finest prog rock band of all time. Grade: B+
Old Music: A slight Oasis kick had me pondering the best three albums by the band. I say: 1- Definitely Maybe, 2- (What’s The Story) Morning Glory, 3- Be Here Now. The UK says: 1- (What’s The Story) Morning Glory, 2- Definitely Maybe, 3- Be Here Now. The US says they only have one album worth mentioning and that would be (What’s The Story) Morning Glory.
Sports: Yanks lost to the Red Sox and they better win today, if they get swept they are out of first place. Mets lost. What angers me about the Yanks is how they finally lessened my skepticism and then went on a .500 run.
OneLove Manchester – The problem with this is that Ariana Grande sucks. I mean musically. Otherwise, I am down all the way. Chris Martin was exceptional, Coldplay remind me of Bon Jovi, superb over a half an hour greatest hits set, a drag over 90 minutes. As another publication (was it “New York”?) noted, Liam has done nothing but insult Chris for years, and yet Chris still joined him for “Live Forever”.
