These Days: Tuesday, August 9th, 2016

rock nyc: Apparently, Mani of the Stone Roses didn’t approve of my review where I claimed he looked like shit and played about as well, and responded as follows: “ It’s mani stone roses her, FOR REAL !. I must have fucked this wankers mother and missus together back in ’95 judging by the viciousness he’s exhibiting towards me in this piece of shit blog. Four words for you mate, suck my fucking prick !. What a dick. I’m so glad that myself trying to make a living for myself makes that vein in your temple pop out. Uptight knobhead.” I’ve received my own fair share of hate mail but this was very impressive.

The Olympics: If NBC were getting paid based upon my viewing, they’d be in bankruptcy by now. The opening ceremony was down 25% in viewership since the London Olympics 2012. They shoulda gotten Spice Girls to perform. After that the numbers have bounced back, with the US taking over swimming and Japan winning gold for gymnastics.

Television: “Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah will not be returning for the 42nd season of “Saturday Night Live” this fall.” I’m surprised Killan is leaving, apparently he is directing an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie and the powers that be (aka Lorne) wasn’t happy or something.

Live: Getting in fighting trim for the upcoming Twenty One Pilots gig, who I don’t hate as much as I once did after hearing em more intensely. I am not crazy about their mash up modern sounds of pop, but I see why you are. Then Barbra Streisand, and then Blink 182! I was thinking of going to City Winery to see Greg Allman, but $175 for a seat, $100 SRO and an additional $75 to become a member of the City Winery? That’s a little pricey. Plus, I’d have to buy dinner.

Recorded: I made the new Dinosaur Jr my album of the week, but you know, I’m gonna claim peer pressure on that one. It doesn’t survive the listen again two days later test. Listening to Presley quite a bit, and the Prince, a bit of disappointment in both cases. This is part of my through the past slowly series. For Presley, it is the 36th album I’m reviewing (actually. the 38th I am reviewing, I started in the 70s and changed my mind and double back to the start). Yup.

Journalism: Rolling Stone’s estimable journalist Matt Taibbi is the only guy I’ve read anywhere who has echoed my concerns about a one party democracy.

Death: From NYT: “Fred Tomlinson, a singer and arranger who led a troupe of vocalists on “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” and other British television shows, died on July 17. He was 88. Mr. Tomlinson led the Fred Tomlinson Singers, who sang loudly about topics like canned meat (while wearing horned Viking helmets) in “Spam Song” and lumberjacks, led by one with a penchant for cross-dressing, in “The Lumberjack Song,” which he wrote with Michael Palin and Terry Jones.”
