These Days: Thursday, July 6th, 2017

North Korea: Totalitarianism is the new democracy and six years into his reign of terror Kim Jong Un’s the sine qua non of dictators, a brutal mother fucker who has stamped out all opposition and stared down both China and the USA. Given the new reality, perhaps it is time to remember how freaked we were when Pakistan and India went nuclear. It is clearly possible that the West is miscalculating North Korea the same way they mistook his Pillsbury Doughboy look for stupidity. In the end, mutually assured destruction is a pretty big stopgap and the US waited too long to stop North Korea and now there is nothing they can do… except invade North Korea, I would assume there would be something like 250K dead before the war ends within a week or so (if all goes well). No option is in the slightest appealing.

Old Music: I’ve decided on Frank Sinatra for my next delving into the catalog, starting with his first release The Voice Of Frank Sinatra from 1946. That means there is three years of songs that I have to find and his Greatest Hits 1940 – 1947 is not available anywhere which leaves me on YouTube. Still not even at the start, but it seems to me that years from 1939 – 1946 and the first album are huge transitionally for Sinatra, I am probably writing this with Ken Shane (unless he changes his mind) and it will post simultaneously on rock nyc and Pop Dose. But first, those early seven years…

New Music: I am reaching it is pretty good mode with 4:44, or maybe not, but either way I am still listening to it. I am so ready for the new set of down tomorrow.

Concerts: James Taylor tonight… I am so busy I have no promise I’ll make it past intermission. Steez tomorrow. Mellencamp and Beth Ditto next week…

Movies: Despicable Me 3, Gru gets a twin brother and a not too great new villain, might have worked if they had connected the three strands of the story, especially Agnes (the youngest child) in her search for a unicorn. It misses completely the cruel edge of the first DM, there are no characters who change, or learn anything at all, but it isn’t the worst kids movie in the world . Grade: B-

Sports: The Yanks lose again, the Mets were rained out.

Abortion: If you like your right to choose, you still won’t keep your right to choice if and when Anthony Kennedy retires. What will women do if they repeal Roe vs Wade?

Death: Former Prince Drummer John Blackwell Jr. Dead at 43. The NPG mainstay battled a brain tumor twice, simple proof that if cancer once you, then you are dead.
